TEXTURE IN THE GARDEN

Designing your garden to include a variety of textures will add another layer of visual interest beyond color. Flowers, trees, mulch and stone can all be used to enhance the texture of your garden.

EXAMPLE: FLOWERS AND TEXTURE

The petals of most tulips have a soft, smooth appearance. Others, such as parrot tulips and fringed tulips, have petals with jagged edges and irregular surfaces. Adding plants with contrasting textures makes any planting more visually exciting.

EXAMPLE: FOLIAGE AND TEXTURE

Perennials offer many opportunities to create wonderful texture combinations. In a shady garden, you can pair the glossy leaves of hostas with with lacy-leaved ferns and the velvety foliage of pulmonaria and lady's mantle.

EXAMPLE: SHAPE AND TEXTURE

The overall shape of a plant also adds texture to your garden. The spreading branches of a small tree will create an interesting contrast with a tightly clipped boxwood hedge and the silky foliage of ornamental grasses.
